 Born 30 November 1940 Passed 15 December 2020

It is with the most profound sorrow that we inform you of the passing of our beloved Father, Grandfather and Great Grandfather, Michael John Smith. Dad, "Mick," peacefully passed at his beloved home surrounded by the love of his five children, brother Vin, fourteen grandchildren, one great-grandchild and extended family.

The eternal love of Dad’s previously passed and deeply missed wife, Kerry, was everpresent. Dad is now at eternal peace in heaven with Kerry and his loving parents.

Dad was a true gentleman and family man with deep Christian values whose guidance, support and love will forever remain. We will speak his name often, celebrate his life with joy, be emboldened by his resolve and be led by his family first principals to pass on to future generations. The mention of his name will trigger family love, joy, reverence, and a deep sense of pride. Dad will forever remain in all our hearts with an eternal family legacy.

Born 30 November 1940 in Mildura Victoria, Dad was the second son of his loving parents, Pat and Maud. Together with his "big brother" Vin, they built their family foundations in Mildura to eventually settle in Moorabbin. Strength, determination, Christian values and deep empathetic family connections were their bedrock.

Possessing energy, enthusiasm and a resolve to achieve the best he could from himself, Dad was a CBC academic scholarship recipient and talented schoolboy sportsman. Dad was the Club Champion of the Glenhuntly Athletics Club over 440 yards, a YMCA representative footballer, recruited as an Under 19 Melbourne VFL player and talented tennis player. Dad's true calling arrived in his later schoolyears when he met the one and only love of his life, Kerry. Consuming his eternal attention and dedication from the moment they first met, they each committed their every breath and focus to their deep love, young family and our collective story. Their guiding love and family values will forever remain their joint legacy. As their children, we always knew we were loved and cherished.

With his family always remaining his priority, Dad's professional career was a history of exceptional achievement. Commencing as a Commbank cadet, Dad progressed quickly and became a qualified property valuer. Dad then began his lifelong executive career with Jones Lang Wootton/LaSalle in commercial property investment services. The first and only Australian appointed as International Chairman of JLW, Dad and his team guided the company to a new future, merging with LaSalle Partners in 1999. From this base, the company has continued to grow to be a true global industry leader.

Dad remains one of the most universally respected and liked individuals in his industry, however, it was his humility and ability to always communicate with every person he met with equal respect and enthusiasm, which resonated with us most.

Equally profound was Dad’s strong sense of adventure and he encouraged all of us to be part of his experiences. Dad thoroughly enjoyed people and places. His curiosity to hear of each person’s own stories and adventures as a first principle was infectious as was his desire to share time with lots of laughter and affection.

Whilst leaving us with many stories to tell, Dad would want his story told in simple terms, true to his family values and legacy. His was a love story, created with the single love of his life Kerry and the family they forged together. We will speak their names often, celebrate their life and legacy, and share our family journey with a smile.

Michael John Smith, like all great teachers, communicators, and protectors, will live eternal through his family legacy and the generations that follow.

All our love to you Dad Sharon, Mark, Linda, Deb, Pat, Melanie, Perry, Sean and Tania together with all your grand and great grand-children.

Dad requested a private family ceremony and encouraged donations to The Alfred Foundation in preference to flowers.

We strongly encourage and welcome all those who wish to share a story or moment reflective of their positive memories and experiences with Dad to the email address listed below. We will share these moments and have them live on with Dad through his ever-growing family legacy. Email smithmob.1@bigpond.com
