Publication: The Mercury
Date Listed: 27/4/2024
Location: Sandy Bay

Passed away peacefully at age 94 to be reunited with his beloved wife Deda. His children, grandchildren and great grandchildren remember him as a man of character. A fourth generation Master Mariner, owner of the ketch Julie Burgess, he had a passion for seafaring and all things maritime. He served his local community through the Port of Devonport Authority for over 30 years. He championed the preservation and promotion of maritime history and Tasmanian history in general. He had a deep love for his Country and did his bit to serve her. Fiercely independent, he championed the underdog and never shied from speaking truth to power.

He lived a full life and will be missed and forever remembered by all.

Children: Keiron, Vanessa, and John.

Grandchildren: Abby, Chris, Grant, Hollea, James, Matthew, Miriam, Nathaniel, Phil, Rebekah, Sally, Sarah, and William.

Great Grandchildren: Charlie, Charlise, Elena, Ella, Harry, Isabella, Lily, Maddy, Matilda, Harriet Noah, Rosie, Tobias, and Will.

His long watch is over, may he rest in God’s peace.
