Record Set in Slaughtering Event

TWO local slaughtermen are believed to have set a new record for the handling of beasts here on Tuesday. Starting from scratch, they slaughtered seven bullocks, did preliminary dressing & had them hung in 54 minutes 29 Seconds. The two men are Mr Tom Twaddle, who is employed by Garbutt Brothers & Mr Ron McFarlane, who is employed by Mr S. Frau. The men had been bet that they could not handle seven beasts in an hour. They won their bet with a little over five minutes to spare. Their attempt attracted wide interest here among butchers & cattlemen and they had an audience of some 30 or 40 men at the slaughter yard to watch them on Tuesday morning. Joint timekeepers were the new Stock inspector & Mr E. R. Garbutt. The men’s attempt was begun with one bullock standing ready to be felled & three others waiting in the crush. On the average, they completed their handling of each beast in 7 minutes 47 seconds. The following is an excerpt from an article printed in the Herbert River Express in 1953
