The President, Duncan McConnel SC, on behalf of the Northern Territory Bar Association acknowledges the recent passing of one of its founding members, Ian Barker QC.
Ian was a lawyer of great ability and intellect. He was appointed as Queens Counsel in 1974 and was a significant influence in the establishment of self-government for the Northern Territory in 1978.
Ian became the first Solicitor-General of the Northern Territory after self-government and returned to the independent bar in 1980.
He was the President of the NSW Bar Association from 1997-1999 and remained in practice as a barrister until his retirement in 2017.
Ian upheld the finest traditions of the bar.
The members of the NTBA extend their sincere condolences to Ian’s wife Penny and family.
A gathering to celebrate Ian’s contribution to life and the law will be held at the Darwin Sailing Club at 6.00 pm on 10 February 2022.
