RICHARDS MBE MR LEWIS (LOU) THOMAS CHARLES On May 8, 2017, Mr Lewis (Lou) Thomas Charles Richards MBE passed away. Mr Richards was born into one of the most famous Collingwood families in 1923 and debuted for the Collingwood Football Club, wearing the No. 24 jumper at Princes Park in 1941. He went on to play for the Club for 15 years, playing 250 games and kicking 423 goals. He was Captain from 1952 to 1955 leading the side to a Premiership in 1953. On retiring from the game, Mr Richards started a long and distinguished career in the media as a football commentator. He worked across print, radio and television starting with the Argus newspaper, and radio 3XY in 1955, before moving on to The Sun, radio 3DB, and then to the Sunday Age. Mr Richards was a member of the inaugural broadcast team for Channel Seven's World of Sport in 1958. He was synonymous with the best of Australian sports radio and television including Channel Nine's Wide World of Sports, Sports Sunday and the Sunday Footy Show. He retired from all presenting roles in 2008. Mr Richards was made a Member of the Order of the British Empire in 1981, received an Australian Sports Medal in 2000, and was awarded a Centenary Medal in 2001. In 1996 Mr Richards was inducted into the Australian Football Hall of Fame and in 2008 was inducted into the Sport Australia Hall of Fame. Loving husband of Edna (dec.), beloved father of Nicole and Kim, and doting grandfather and great-grandfather to Lucy, Amy, Hannah, Mathew, Ned, Jack, Albert, James, Freddie and Olive.
