Ms C Daniels OAM The Chairman, interim CEO, members and staff of the Northern Land Council mourn the passing of Ms C Daniels OAM, a senior Wurlngarri Traditional Owner from Ngukurr.
Ms C Daniels was awarded an Order of Australia in the 2016 Queens Birthday Honours List.
Among her achievements was the founding of a women’s ranger group in the mid 1990s, the Yugul Mangi Rangers in 1999 and the Ngukurr Language Centre in 1999 to revitalise, document, teach and promote the traditional languages of the community’s seven clans – Marra, Ngandi, Ngalakan, Nunggubuyu, Alawa, Ritharrngu, Wandarrang.
Ms C Daniels was instrumental in pushing for the establishment of the 20,000 sq km South Eastern Arnhem Land Indigenous Protected Area, which was declared in September 2016.
Ms C Daniels was a particularly strong advocate and role model for the women in her community, the Northern Territory and beyond.
A funeral for Ms Daniels will be held on 24 April 2019 in Ngukurr.
