LANDY, John Michael AC CVO MBE FTSE

Geelong Grammar School (GGS) and our community remember John fondly and gratefully as an exceptional student (1945-48), an inspirational staff member (Corio and Timbertop 1954-57), an active Old Geelong Grammarian (OGG Committee 1953-57, OGG Fellow), a donor and member of the Geelong Grammar Foundation. We celebrate John’s remarkable career as an athlete, teacher, scientist and naturalist with a lifelong interest in beetles and butterflies. John said that his greatest lesson from GGS and Sir James Darling (Headmaster 1930-61) was a sense of responsibility to others and the world around him. It was a lesson well learned and we honour John’s life of service, which included serving as a foundation member of the Land Conservation Council (1971-79), President of Athletics International (1973-77), Chair of the Australia Day Committee (1990-93) and Governor of Victoria (2001-06). The John Landy Club was founded at GGS in 1976 to foster and develop athletics throughout the School. On behalf of the GGS community, we send our condolences to John’s family, particularly his wife Lynne and their two children, Matthew and Alison.
