A former lecturer in English at La Trobe University, Gareth was blessed with a brilliant mind and a playful sense of humour, but cursed with bouts of crippling anxiety and black depression.

His friends recall him as a wit and creative raconteur, ever capable of ironic observation.

In the last painful year of his life, Gareth summoned up deep reserves of stoicism, humour and gratitude.
