HUMPHREYS, Dr. Michael S.

17/06/1942 - 13/04/2021
Publication: Sunday Mail QLD
Date Listed: 16/4/2021
Location: Brookfield

Born in the United States, but of Brisbane for the last 42 years.

Professor Emeritus of the School of Psychology, The University of Queensland, Fellow of the Academy of the Social Sciences in Australia. B.A. (Reed); PhD (Stanford).

He leaves behind his wife, Anita Steinerts, his daughters Karin Humphreys and son in law Scott Watter, Andrea Humphreys and partner Chaitanya Gurrapu, grandchildren Julian, Maya and Neil, a multitude of former students and colleagues, two native rainforests he planted or rehabilitated, and a remarkable lifetime’s contribution to the science of human memory. Son of Lloyd (d) and Dorothy Humphreys (d), brother of Jack (d), Margaret and Susan.

He will be deeply missed by all, but we will go on as he taught us.

We will recall his fearsome intellect, his bear-trap of a memory, his humour, his passion, and his humaneness.

At his request, there will be no funeral service. He has opted for private water cremation in line with his staunch environmental principles. A memorial event will be announced at a later date, to be held in person at UQ and live-streamed to his many far-flung family, friends and colleagues.

In his honour, please consider donating to, or attending a working bee of the Moggill Creek Catchment Group (if you attend the Gap Creek section, you can see some of his legacy in person). A GoFundMe site entitled “Michael S Humphreys memorial gifts for bushcare” has more information.
