IN MEMORY OF TONY HOUEY

It is with deep sadness we announce the death of Anthony “Tony” Wing Cheong Houey.

He lost his battle with a second bout of cancer and passed away on the 18th May 2025 at The Memorial Hospital, North Adelaide.

Tony leaves behind a lasting legacy, having been a part of the lives of thousands of students, colleagues, parents, and friends.

He was Deputy Principal at Pembroke School for 23 years before retiring in 2015. He was made a life member in 2018, having served across many aspects of school life.

After an education at De La Salle College, Melbourne and earning marks to be a top student of the State, Tony graduated with double law degrees from Monash University.

He entered law practice with Maddock, Lonie and Chisholm, before following his passion for teaching at St Michael’s Grammar School.

Beyond his service at Pembroke, Tony served on the Council of St Mark’s College and Waldorf School Mount Barker, as President of Debating SA, Chair of ANZELA, AISSA, and the Teachers Registration Board of SA and as a Justice of the Peace.

In retirement, he continued his passion for education, returning to teaching at Pembroke and St Peter’s Girls School, as well as mentoring student teachers at Tabor College.

His most passionate public service was with the Cancer Council of SA, where he was an ambassador for eleven years.

Tony will be remembered for his passion for teaching, his legacy at the organisations he served, the love for his family and grandchildren, and his ‘punny’ sense of humour.

He is survived by his wife Jeanette, son Andrew, daughter-in-law Adele, grandchildren William, Jack and Florence, sister Helena, brother-in-law Elton and nieces Robin and Michelle.

Tony had an enormous amount of respect and gratitude for all the medical professionals who helped him throughout his journey.
