Died peacefully in Tamworth on Monday, 10 August 2020, aged 78 years. Dearly loved by his family, Stephen was the cherished husband of Joy, and brother to David, wife Marie, Jim (dec), wife Margaret, Wilfred (dec), wife Louise, Barbara and husband Hugh. Brother-in-law to Don and Sandra, Fred (dec) and Pat, an Uncle to many nieces and nephews, Stephen was also a friend to numerous colleagues whom he held in high esteem.
Born in 1942 to Dick and Nell Harris, Stephen spent his early life in Arnhem Land and Wee Waa, before being educated at Trinity Grammar School, the University of Sydney and the University of New Mexico, USA. Stephen’s life work was education anthropology and establishing bilingual schools with Australian indigenous communities. Later he was a Reader in Aboriginal Studies at Darwin University, NT.
Stephen retired to the Tamworth region where he pursued his love of the Australian Stock horse and joined with his family in farming endeavours at “Wongala”, Barraba.
Stephen’s funeral will be held at St Laurence’s Barraba on Tuesday, 18 August at 11am. Details are available at sgharris.net.au.
