DIMATTINA, Salvatore
Ordained a priest at St Patrick’s Cathedral,
East Melbourne
on 26 July 1959.
After his ordination on
26 July 1959,
Fr Dimattina had a temporary appointment at the Heidelberg Repatriation Hospital and was then appointed Assistant Priest at
North Melbourne (1960).
From October 1960 to June 1964, he undertook studies at the College of St Peter Apostle, Rome. Upon his return to Melbourne, Fr Dimattina was appointed to the following parishes:
Priest in Charge, Kingsville (1964); Assistant Priest, Brunswick West (1965); Administrator, Brunswick West (1970);
Assistant Priest, Ascot Vale (1971);
Administrator, Brunswick North (1972);
Parish Priest,
Brunswick North (1973); Parish Priest, Ascot Vale (1982).
In 1981, Fr Dimattina’s wide social experience and talents brought an appointment as Episcopal Vicar for Justice, Development and Peace, a role that he held
for 25 years.
Fr Dimattina’s final parish appointment was as Parish Priest of Ascot Vale (1982) and in 1999 he was appointed
Pastor Emeritus.
He passed away at
Justin Villa, Balwyn on
23 March 2023
aged 89 years.
Fr Dimattina will be remembered for his wisdom and untiring service to the Church in Melbourne.
