Maureen Garretson, born and raised in Matcham, New South Wales, Australia, passed away in early April in Seattle, Washington.

Maureen gave freely of her time and talents. She served her adopted country of the United States as an officer's wife and accompanied her former husband Hank Garretson, Lt. Col., US Air Force on his military assignments all over the US and Germany. The first in her family to attend university, she obtained a BA in Sociology, a BA in Journalism, and an MA in Communications. She led a fulfilling and well-rounded professional life as a journalist, travel coordinator, and educator. Maureen was fluent in German and Italian. She delighted in exploring other countries and cultures, from Romania to the Amazon, Fiji to Mexico. As a woman of great faith, she was a deacon at St. Andrew's Presbyterian in Newport Beach, CA. When she retired, she continued to serve her community as a volunteer ombudsman with Americorps. Her vibrant personality, openheartedness, and compassion are deeply missed by all those fortunate enough to have known her.

Maureen was preceded in death by cherished brothers Gordon and Malcom, and dear parents, Roy and Doris Paterson. She is survived by her devoted daughter and son-in-law Georgina and Joe, grandson Ian, granddaughter Vivienne, former husband Hank, beloved sister and brother-in-law Anita and family, brother Vance, and many nieces and nephews. Memorial services will be held in Maple Valley, Washington at 4pm (PST) on June 21. In lieu of flowers, the family request donations be made to Reporters Without Borders.
