MAGUIRE, Professor Errol John

15/06/1940 - 12/04/2022

Mater Private Hospital Townsville would like to acknowledge the passing of a significant member of Townsville’s medical community, Professor Errol John Maguire AM.

Professor Maguire made an incredible contribution to Townsville’s healthcare sector over three decades and was an instrumental part of Mater Townsville’s general surgical services.

Mater extends its sincere condolences to Professor Maguire’s wife Marcia, children John, Michael, Melinda, Bridget, Kate and Richard, and 11 grandchildren.

Born in 1940 in Cairns and moving to Brisbane for his high school years, Professor Maguire graduated from the prestigious St Joseph’s College Gregory Terrace in 1958 before studying medicine at the University of Queensland.

Working in both public and private hospitals, Professor Maguire spent more than three decades practicing as a general surgeon. He was highly regarded in the Townsville community as an eminent surgeon and statesmen who pursued excellence in all his endeavours.

Professor Maguire cared deeply for his patients, including during his time in the Army Reserves where he rose to the rank of Honourable Colonel while serving as a surgeon on deployments to Timor and Bougainville.

Professor Maguire also devoted a significant amount of time to the Catholic Church and as a result was ordained into the Knights of the Holy Sepulchre – a Papal order and ordained by or on behalf of the Pope.

Professor Maguire passed on his love of medicine to his three sons, all becoming qualified surgeons, and dedicated two decades of his life to sharing his exceptional knowledge and skills with students, residents, and registrars as a Professor of Surgery.

Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord, and let Your perpetual light shine upon him. May his soul and the souls of all the faithful departed rest in peace.
