Monash University is deeply saddened to learn of the death of the Honourable Joseph Ezra (Joe) Isaac AO, on 17 September, 2019, aged 97 years.
Already a professor of economics at his alma mater, the University of Melbourne, Joe joined Monash in 1965 as a foundation professor in the Faculty of Economics and Politics, resigning his chair to become deputy president (1974-1987) of the Australian Conciliation and Arbitration Commission. The first economist to occupy that key role, Joe was able to link seamlessly the theory and practice of industrial relations, facilitating the combination of economics and law underpinning successful employment and wage regulation in Australia.
From 1980 to 1988, Joe served Monash as its deputy chancellor, first to Sir Richard Eggleston, and then, from 1983, Sir George Lush. In 1987, Monash appointed Joe an emeritus professor.
In 1989, he was appointed an Officer of the Order of Australia (AO), and in 1991 he was awarded an honorary doctorate of economics by Monash. On behalf of the entire University community, we pay tribute to the life and outstanding achievements of Emeritus Professor Joe Isaac, and offer our sincere sympathy to his family on their great loss.
