ROGERS AO. — DAVID WILLIAM (BILL) AO
21.3.1926 -14.9.2019
Monash University is deeply saddened to learn of the death of David William (Bill) Rogers, AO, on 14 September, 2019, aged 93 years.
Bill was the University’s fifth Chancellor (1992 –1999) though his association went back much further, when as a young lawyer he advised on the acquisition of the Clayton campus. Bill steered the University through a period of changing structure and shape. Whilst he particularly enjoyed ceremonial occasions, he was mindful of the words of Aesop; “fools take to themselves the respect that is given to their office” and was careful never to lose sight of his obligations to humanity.
Throughout his career, Bill straddled the worlds of business and academia with considerable aplomb, holding a number of directorships including those of the Australian Mutual Provident Society (AMP) and the Broken Hill Proprietary Company Limited (BHP). As Chair of Woodside Petroleum Ltd (1986-1999) he was regarded as one of the company’s pioneers.
In 1998 Bill was appointed an Officer of the Order of Australia (AO) and in 1999 he was awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Laws by Monash. On behalf of the whole University community we offer our sincere sympathy to Jan Rogers and the family on their great loss.
